Big School Admissions in Powai

Big school admission can be a daunting task for parents.
As I moved here from Gurgaon, I saw that unlike Gurgaon pre schools; which arrange a session or a workshop for parents on how to tackle Big School admissions every year, Parents in Powai are more or less on their own and are left to fend for themselves.
I think Workshops on Big school admissions in Mumbai - seem like a great biz idea.
Till then, let me share what I have learnt about Big school admissions and hope it helps parents like me:
Eligibility and Admission Notices
  • The first thing you need to know is whether your child is eligible for admission for the year. Some schools like Bombay Scottish start from Jr.Kg. and for example - All children born in 2007 were eligible for admissions this year i.e. 2011. So, the rule is that your child should be at least 3 years to be eligible for admission into Jr.Kg, which begins in June 2011.
  • If this is the right time, choose the schools you would like to apply to. Normally, most parents want their kids to go to a school in their vicinity. Some of the Big Schools in Powai are mentioned here
  • One of the first schools which put up their admission notice is S.M. Shetty in October /  November which is followed by Gopal Sharma School around the same time. This time Pawar Public School was a new addition as it has opened its branch in Chandivali, Powai. Their admission forms were also released in November. These were followed by the Jr. Kg. admission notice by Bombay Scottish in January.
  • Pick at least 3 schools to apply to - in order to always have a backup.
Process:
  • Ensure that you don't miss out on taking the admission form, so keep checking on the school website or visit the school if you can.
  • Once you have the forms. Take a photocopy of the form and fill it out with a pencil first so, in case you make a mistake you can erase and correct it rather than wasting a form.
  • Make sure you have filled the form and followed the instructions properly.
  • Also, after filling up the form completely - take a photocopy so that you know what your final form looked like in case you need it for future reference.
That's it.

Most schools like S.M. Shetty, call you or let you know your interaction dates when you submit the form while others call / mail the results to you after a week or so from form submission. The interaction for most schools is pretty casual.

Bombay Scottish results for Jr. Kg. were released in first / second week of May and for Sr. Kg. it is expected in the first / second week of June. For information, parents can call the school and the recorded voice gives you most of the required details. (Though, in this day and age I wish they would mention the results on their website too. As, waiting for the postman or missing the most coveted letter can be such a torturous experience for already harrowed parents).
If you have any experiences, information about any other schools please feel free to share till then Happy school hunting :-)

well this is quite intresting. Any idea about the prefrence they give to the complex you stay in . For example , Does Bombay scottish gives prefrence to the ones who stay in Raheja ?

One more thing , what is the donation scene , is there something like merit which exists or its just that one has to pay some donation or the other ?

Nidhi said...

Hi, I don't really think that they give too much preference to the complex you stay in. Also, don't really think that donation works with Bombay Scottish. Though, I have heard of some cases where maybe if you have any ' high level contact' who might be able to pull some strings to get the admission as a personal favour. But most parents are pretty cagey in disclosing / discussing the same here. Hope this helps.

gopal sharma's forms are out.they have very clearly mentioned that fees needs to be paid at at time of submission of forms and fees would not be refunded after confirmation of admission. my son is in nursery and i want to try for Hiranandani foundation school but its forms will come in jan. gopal sharma is just a back up school.
i feel its wrong on the part of school to not refund the fees back.
i'm in big dilemma should i fill the form form for gopal sharma or wait for hfs admkissions

I am interested in knowing the admission procedure for 'Hiradale'. I have a 2 year old whom I would like to admit. Do they give preference only to owners of Hiranandani apartments ? Are forms from non-owners of Hiranandani-apartments considered for admission to Hiradale ? What is their admission cycle ?

Thanks!

Is it necessary to own a place in Hiranandani in order to get admission in Hiradale ?

Also could anyone enlighten me on the admission cycle ?

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your blog. I am keen on knowing the admission criteria of Bombay Scottish as I have heard it is tough getting through and none that I know of got into. Kindly help.

They have around 150 seats for Jr.KG , for which they are getting more than 1000 applications. So only 10 percents of the applicants will get admitted. And in higher standards , even if they are having vacant seats , they dont admit any one to those seats.

Hi, just saw this site and liked it very much... I could relate to the comments posted on the site regarding delivery as well as schooling... I had a normal delivery by Dr. Raut in Dec 2011 and thruout the pregnancy, she had guided me with smile and patience... So, I give her 10/10.

regarding school admissions, am really concerned and feel that nowhere it is clearly mentioned the admission criteria.. Can someone from the group share their experiences with regard admission criteria in schools like bombay scottish, hiranandani foundation, gopal sharma, s m shetty

Hello,

You have a wonderful blog. Nice to know about and around Powai as we are planning to move there mid next year.

Nahar International School would be starting in Jun 2014..do you have any knowledge about type of teachers/curriculum and any other info circulating? We plan to live at Nahar as well.

Also in your list of schools posted in another blog, which school would be best for a 6 year old girl moving from US?

Appreciate your response.

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi
Thank you for your kind words.
Any school with an IB board will be fine. Hiranandani School, SM Shetty, New one which is coming up Nahar International and Poddar or Oberoi would be perfect.

Hope it helps.
Cheers

I called Nahar International School for 2014, and my parents met with the school people few days back. The school seems nice and impressive, people nice too. But Fees are too high. Per Year they told us around 3 lacs. We will skip this school, sounds like a ripoff.

Anu said...

This is Anu btw, the one enquiring and replying abt Nahar International School :) Hope to keep in touch !

SM Shetty sounds like a good option right now, they are the only ones open for admission, everyone else opens Jan or around March.

Any feedback on SM Shetty? Do you know where do kids from Nahar go to school mostly? Any preference or feedback that parents can provide here for schools around..we are a little lost here, Wud appreciate any replies on schools!

Thanks so much Nidhi
Anu

I have had a visit at Vivero International, and its very nice one, give the place constraint, they are managing very well. The principle is thorough and well respected (she chaired Hiranandani International for over 1.5 Decade)

They are running from Pre-school/daycare to Sr. KG (They call it K2). Fees are bit high (1.2L for K2) but facilities are very good, safety and control over the movement of kids are big concern for me, hence I am choosing them for my daughter (5 yr for K2).

Do Throw any q for me to answer (I had been to kidzee, jumbo kids, bombay scottish, sm shetty lately)

Sam

Thanks Samir for this info. I have few Qs if you could help
1. Did you check on Hiranandani, do they consider kids whose parents dont own apartment in complex?
2. what is their selection process?
3. And, why did you choose Vivero over Hiro or Bombay Scottish?

What is the feedback for Bombay Scottish Powai and how does it compare to Hiranandani Foundation School?

Nidhi said...

Both schools are great in fact even pawar public school can be considered at par.

Another school as a great option now is Podar International School - Powai, Details here:http://parentinginpowai.blogspot.in/2014/06/new-school-on-block-podar-public-school.html

SM Shetty is really underrated as a school. My daughter studied there for a year before we had to move away. The teachers in the international IGCSE side were brilliant, the delivery of curriculum was very good and the school struck a very good balance between introducing a lot of world culture/music and traditional Indian shlokas/mantras etc. No bollywood stuff which so many schools resort to...I was very impressed. The mix of kids was also good and they are sensitive to working moms which is a big plus.

hey hi loved your discussions...just looking for an advice as iam planning to shift to powai from next academic year can you suggest that after hirannadani and bombay scottish which is the next best rated schools.
is it gopal sharma international school or s.m sheety school or pawar public. as iam looking for icse board for 8th std

Anonymous said...

I want to shift my child from present ICSE to SSC
I prefer S.M shetty.
My child is very much interested in sports and not in academics he finds ICSE very tough
Also how is S.M shetty school for sports???

Please let me know
about age criteria as he will be only 11 years for std.7 would he have to repeat 6th std again since shift from ICSE to SSC

Nidhi said...

I personally have heard good reviews of SM Shetty. Also, depends which school is your kid going to currently. Also, I believe a national board or an IB Board is better than an SSC board.
Hope this info helps in your decision making.
